At 22, Samkelo Sesethu Thyokolo is building a more stable future for himself, one shaped by greater confidence, self-awareness and a renewed belief in what is possible. Originally from Sterkstroom (Eluthuthu) in the Eastern Cape, Samkelo is one of seven siblings. Today, he lives in his own rented home on the same property as his mother and two sisters in Paarl, Western Cape.
Before joining the Elevation Programme, Samkelo faced the uncertainty of temporary employment contracts. The lack of job security affected both his confidence and his hope for the future. Despite these challenges, he remained determined to build a better life.
After a friend shared a post about the Elevation Programme, Samkelo was inspired to join after seeing the opportunities it offered and the positive impact it had made on others.
In August 2025, he attended the Programme’s Life Skills training at Colibri Hall in Wellington. For Samkelo, the training became a turning point. Learning about his identity gave him an opportunity to reflect on who he is, recognise his strengths and understand his potential. He developed tools to strengthen his self-esteem, maintain a positive mindset and make better decisions about his future. He left the training feeling more self-aware and determined to become the best version of himself.
The following month, Samkelo attended the Work Readiness training, where he developed practical skills to prepare him for employment. From writing a professional CV and preparing for interviews to communicating effectively, managing his time, working in a team and taking responsibility, the training equipped him with skills he could apply directly in the workplace.
The lessons that stood out most were interview preparation, presenting himself professionally, managing his time effectively and taking responsibility. For Samkelo, these skills strengthened his confidence and helped him feel ready to enter the world of work.
In November 2025, his dedication to personal growth and self-development reached a significant milestone when he secured employment as a security guard with Phangela Group in Paarl.
In his role, Samkelo is responsible for monitoring activities, controlling access, protecting property and helping to maintain a safe environment for everyone on site. The knowledge and confidence he gained through the Elevation Programme played an important role in preparing him for this opportunity. Today, he continues to apply what he has learnt as he grows personally and professionally, building not only a career but also a more stable future for himself.
Samkelo’s story is a reminder that creating opportunity starts with equipping people to recognise their own potential and giving them the tools and confidence to take their next step.
