Based in Groendal, Franschhoek, Hope Through Action (HTA) is transforming a diverse community and uniting them through sport. HTA uses sport to drive change and development. “Our goal is not to create sports stars,” says Stefan Howell, Director of HTA. Instead, their aim is to empower vulnerable children, helping them become strong, resilient citizens who can rise above their current circumstances. HTA seeks to create a safe environment for its beneficiaries and establish pathways for learning.

HTA is more than just a community centre; it’s a catalyst for widespread change. With branches in Malmesbury and Mbekweni, HTA offers a wide range of programmes that cater to individuals at every stage of life. From their Early Childhood Development Centre, which nurtures young minds, to the Yeboneers internship programme for unemployed youth, HTA provides opportunities for personal and professional growth.

HTA also plays a crucial role as the implementing partner of the YearBeyond programme with the Western Cape Education Department (WCED). This programme is designed to enhance the employability of vulnerable youth. YearBeyond interns, known as Yeboneers, foster a culture of community service. They ensure that scholars arrive at school safely and on time, addressing the issue of high absenteeism in vulnerable communities. The programme starts at the top of the community, making the journey to school enjoyable by singing songs and guiding scholars through the streets in the unique “walking bus.”

By fostering discipline, teamwork, and life skills through sport and education, HTA’s junior, senior, and social leagues create an inclusive environment for all. Community members regularly use HTA’s facilities, whether it’s accessing their computers to update and print CVs or attending gym and evening classes to stay fit and healthy.

HTA deepens its impact by establishing a middle ground that addresses the needs of all levels of the community, despite the challenges in at-risk areas. Through their dedication to social upliftment, the Val de Vie Foundation proudly continues to support HTA.
