Founded in 2017, Franschhoek Hospitality Academy (FHA), a beneficiary of the Val de Vie Foundation, has seen 97 graduates, of whom 92 are permanently employed. The class of 2024 graduated on 11 February 2025 and 21 graduates received their certificates. Emotions were high as this milestone marked significant achievement for many graduates who faced hardships throughout their studies.

Academy Head Jeremy Davids led the heartfelt ceremony, personalising it by highlighting the unique gifts and talents of every graduate, while emphasising Nelson Mandela’s famous quote, “Education is the most powerful weapon,” which is what FHA firmly believes.

FHA’s founder, Michaela Julian, was unfortunately unable to attend the ceremony in person however, she recorded a message for the class of 2024, which was played during the event. A message from the principal of the International College of Tourism and Management (ITM) in Austria was also played to inspire the graduates. Each year, two graduates are selected to further their education at ITM. For some students who have never even left the Western Cape, travelling abroad is a monumental milestone and something to aspire towards.

In Franschhoek, the inequalities are hard to ignore. As a region so rich in the hospitality industry, the vision for Franschhoek Hospitality Academy was brought to life. FHA now receives over 400 applications annually, from which 80 applicants are interviewed and only around 26 are selected for the course. Throughout the year, students undergo a 38-week training programme and complete a 4-week internship at restaurants and hotels in and around Franschhoek, giving them practical experience and exposure to the industry under the supervision of seasoned professionals.

Franschhoek Hospitality Academy measures its success by the number of graduates who secure permanent employment—a standard clearly reflected in their alumni, many of whom are now working across Europe, including in Michelin-starred restaurants. Ending the ceremony, a representative of the class of 2024 mentioned that the course was an act of self-commitment, requiring hard work to reach where they are today. Offering words of encouragement to the class of 2025, a representative also took the pledge for this year’s class to uphold FHA’s standards.

The Val de Vie Foundation continues to support FHA and its dedication to empowering talented youth in the Franschhoek Valley. By providing a nurturing environment for learning and skill development, Franschhoek Hospitality Academy helps young people unlock their potential, pursue opportunities beyond the valley and ultimately return to uplift their communities.
