Freedom Day marked a new chapter for the ninth cohort entering the Franschhoek Hospitality Academy programme, a moment charged with purpose, discipline and possibility.
The Franschhoek Hospitality Academy & Learning Centre is a registered Charitable Trust, PBO and NPO committed to youth development within disadvantaged communities. Through evening classes led by industry professionals actively working in the field, students acquire both theoretical knowledge and practical skills that employers in hospitality genuinely seek. These include food and beverage service, kitchen fundamentals, customer communication and professional conduct. Hands-on experience is a core element of the programme, ensuring that what students learn in the classroom is directly applicable in real-world settings such as restaurants, hotels, or event venues.
This ninth cohort steps into that tradition with their eyes open. They are joining an industry grounded in excellence, service and human connection and the Academy’s programme will equip them not just with technical competencies, but with the confidence and character to use those skills well. Over the course of their training, participants will work towards nationally recognised qualifications, build real-world exposure through practical placements, and develop the professional habits that open doors to sustainable employment.
Beyond the curriculum, they carry a deeper responsibility: to inspire by example. Participants were urged to lead with integrity when no one is watching, to uplift one another rather than compete, and to redefine professionalism through respect and passion.
As emerging professionals and role models, they begin shaping how younger generations understand work and conduct. Their punctuality, consistency and daily habits demonstrate that success is earned, not given; that excellence is a practice, not merely an outcome; and that attitude is the first step towards greatness.
On Freedom Day, the cohort was reminded that it was their moment to set the standard, to take ownership of their learning, modelling discipline and compassion equally. Their actions that day aim to resonate beyond the classroom, demonstrating that personal growth, mutual support and disciplined effort can forge pathways to opportunity and lasting impact.
The Val de Vie Foundation is proud to support the Franschhoek Hospitality Academy as it continues its work of turning potential into profession, one student at a time.
