Liam Mokoena, a 10-year-old boy in Year 3, is repeating the year after facing a difficult start to his education. Throughout his early school years, Liam had trouble participating positively in class. His father was in prison, and limited supervision at home meant that his emotional and practical needs often went unmet. His mother, under great stress, found it hard to manage his behaviour.
As a result, Liam often arrived at school untidy, sometimes wearing gumboots even in summer. He was frequently absent and when he did attend, he was often involved in conflicts with his peers. As is so often the case, behind such behaviour was a child quietly seeking stability, love, and care.
Liam’s difficulties never reflected his potential but rather the circumstances around him. Without consistent support at home, he found it hard to regulate his emotions, follow rules, and feel a sense of belonging at school.
With support from Val de Vie Foundation beneficiary, Khula Development Group, and increased stability at home, Liam has started to make progress. He now attends school every day, arrives neatly dressed in his proper uniform and shows clear improvements in his behaviour. He is calmer, more focused, and increasingly respectful towards others.
Liam’s journey emphasises the significant influence of stability, love and support in a child’s life. When children receive consistent guidance at home and encouragement at school, they can develop resilience and hope, reminding us that meaningful change is always achievable when a child is supported to succeed.
