Khula Development Group, a valued beneficiary of the Val de Vie Foundation, is a non-profit organisation dedicated to promoting school attendance and fostering a positive culture of learning among children at risk of disengagement. Through school, home and community-based support in Paarl and Stellenbosch, Khula addresses the social challenges that often prevent learners from reaching their full potential.

In a bustling classroom in an under-resourced community, a class teacher noticed something special, yet concerning, about one little girl. She struggled to connect with her peers, lagged academically, and remained silent during activities. Out of genuine concern for her well-being, the teacher referred her to Khula for support.

The Khula team started with visiting her home to meet her caregivers and secure consent to assist. There, they learned her story: adopted as a baby, she had recently lost her adoptive mother. Her adoptive father, though grieving, stepped up admirably, providing a clean, nurturing environment filled with care.

Khula’s intervention changed everything. This precious girl began to blossom. She now participates in class activities with enthusiasm, chatting openly with her facilitator about her daily preferences. Her confidence has grown, her communication flows more naturally, and her engagement lights up the room.

Khula’s Occupational Therapist then stepped in, assessing her for an official report and exploring signs of possible autism. The school psychologist evaluated her IQ (intelligence quotient), finding it too high for placement in a Learners with Special Educational Needs (LSEN) school. Her mind is remarkable, yet different, and she remains in mainstream schooling, facing the very challenges Khula addresses daily in these communities.

This real-life story highlights a widespread issue, but Khula’s work does not stop here. The team will continue supporting this little girl, trusting that she will unlock her full developmental potential.
