Seeing lives change for the better is Val de Vie Foundation’s ultimate goal and what a life-changing story this is for FHA graduate Jodine Korkee. The Val de Vie Foundation congratulates you on your well-deserved success.

Since opening its doors in 2018, co-founders Michaela Julian and Tarryn Corlett of the Franschhoek Hospitality Academy and Learning Centre (FHA), together with their hardworking team, have made a tremendous impact on the hospitality industry in Franschhoek.

With a rich tourism culture, Franschhoek is full of opportunities in hospitality; however, this is offset by the vast inequalities in vulnerable communities on the outskirts of town. Seeing the potential for social impact, FHA has helped over 100 of its beneficiaries elevate themselves from difficult circumstances to become employable and passionate individuals in the hospitality industry. This year FHA has a class of 26 students in addition to its popular night classes.

Sharing her story, Jodine Korkee, part of FHA’s pioneer group, recently became the first graduate to secure a formal partnership with theLAB Guesthouses. She was given the opportunity to start her business venture under the mentorship of theLAB management. Her guesthouse, theLAB BLUE, opened its doors in July 2024 as part of theLAB portfolio.

Taking a leap of faith, Jodine enrolled in FHA in 2018 and was pleasantly surprised by her newfound love for hospitality. Dedicated to her studies, Jodine was selected to further her education in Austria at the International College of Tourism and Management. This partnership with FHA has grown over the years, with two students per year awarded the opportunity to study abroad.

“In September 2021, I returned to Franschhoek and started as a waitress at Oku Asian Eatery, and after a few months, I was promoted to Restaurant Supervisor. In February 2023, I was fortunate to start as an Assistant Guesthouse Manager at theLAB Franschhoek and now I am part-owner and Manager at theLAB BLUE,” Jodine proudly shared.

With a heart full of gratitude, Jodine thanks FHA for transforming her life. FHA has become a beacon of light for those in the hospitality industry, for emerging sommeliers, waitrons, and managers.

Supporting FHA, a Val de Vie Foundation beneficiary, enables us to expand their impact, nurturing the next generation of leaders.
