The staff at Rusthof Old Age Home were taken by surprise on a rainy Tuesday morning on 3 June when a delivery of brand-new linen and bedding from Whitehouse arrived at their doorstep. Stacked high with essential items, the generous delivery was a sincere gift to Rusthof, a proud beneficiary of the Val de Vie Foundation. Valued at over R200 000, the donation was made to bring comfort and dignity to the elderly residents who call Rusthof home.
Rusthof Old Age Home is a 24-hour frail care residential facility serving vulnerable individuals aged 60 and above in the Paarl East community. The home often relies on charitable donations from businesses such as Whitehouse, as it receives only partial government assistance.
Thanks to Val de Vie Evergreen residents Angela Parr, Linda Slabber and Sharon Abro, who visited Rusthof on a previous Val de Vie Foundation community tour, this act of generosity came to life. Moved by what they saw, they took it upon themselves to make a difference.
Following a previous donation to Rusthof – made possible through proceeds from the Val de Vie Evergreen Christmas Market, where much-needed kitchen items, new beds and mattresses were provided – they decided to take it one step further. They reached out to Jared Kahn, owner of Whitehouse and Sharon’s son-in-law, inspiring the incredible donation that has now brought comfort to every resident at Rusthof.
Upon learning about the home’s needs, the Whitehouse team committed to providing each of the 105 beds with two complete sets of brand-new linen, including pillows, mattress protectors and warm blankets, as well as curtains for each room.
“It is thanks to the actions of individuals like these that we still have hope for our work here at Rusthof,” said Alvira Kleynhans, Rusthof Manager and qualified nurse.
The newly donated items not only bring comfort to the elderly residents in Rusthof’s care but also brighten the work environment for the staff, making their daily duties a little easier.
