In April, 13 teenagers from the Paarl Youth Initiative’s (PYI) Good Company Programme had the incredible opportunity to attend the #Imagine Movement event in Bredasdorp. This gathering brought together over a thousand young people. This experience was made even more special by the presence of five past participants who returned as volunteers and mentors, embodying the spirit of growth and leadership our programme strives to cultivate.

For many of these teenagers from rural farm communities, the event transcended a simple outing. It fostered lasting friendships, nurtured their confidence and cultivated a sense of belonging to a wider community. This newfound independence and teamwork blossomed as they pitched their own tents for the first time, a task filled with laughter. Meanwhile, the powerful praise and worship sessions offered inspiration and a unifying sense of hope.

The joy and excitement they expressed were palpable—moments like these are priceless in helping our youth envision a brighter future. Sharing this experience with so many peers reinforced their sense of belonging and showed them that they were part of something bigger than themselves.

This event embodies the heart of Paarl Youth Initiative’s mission: to empower teenagers through personal development and leadership, while building community connections. Opportunities like the #Imagine Movement foster their growth, resilience, and self-belief, which in turn strengthen their families and communities.

As a beneficiary of the Val de Vie Foundation, these life-changing experiences are made possible, and PYI looks forward to continuing to nurture the potential of our youth through such empowering opportunities.
