24-year-old Marvin Adams is a client of the Drakenstein Association for People with Disabilities (DAPD) protective workshop. Marvin, from Smartie Town in Groenheuwel, Paarl, is an invaluable asset to the organisation. They have noted that he is always willing to assist and does everything to the best of his ability. Despite being diagnosed with Down syndrome, Marvin is highly motivated by sports and has built a successful career in karate, never allowing his disability to stop him from pursuing his passion.

In May last year, Marvin competed in the first Shito Ryu Tournament with the Patrick Ross Karate Academy, where he performed so well that he was awarded a gold medal. Last year, Marvin was selected as a member of the Cape Winelands Karate team and represented South Africa in the disability divisions at the 11th Commonwealth Karate Championship in Durban from 28 November to 1 December. His incredible performance earned him a gold medal—a truly remarkable achievement.

Marvin’s recent achievement at the Commonwealth Karate Championship is a testament to his dedication and hard work. His success is a source of pride for those who have supported him on his journey and a wonderful testament to an organisation like DAPD, a beneficiary of the Val de Vie Foundation that supported him throughout this journey. Marvin’s accomplishment not only breaks barriers but also serves as an inspiration for many within the disability community.
