With the invaluable support of Khula Development Group’s Occupational Therapist, they were able to assist a learner who had been diagnosed with meningitis at a very early age. Initially, the school faced significant challenges in obtaining the learner’s medical records, as the parent was hesitant to visit the hospital to retrieve them. Recognising the urgency, Khula took the initiative to draft a permission letter for the parent to sign, authorising the release of the medical records. This thoughtful step allowed them to access the necessary documents smoothly and without further delay.

Upon careful review of the records and assessments, it became clear that the learner’s ongoing difficulties were closely linked to a pattern of neglect at home. These challenges significantly impacted her development, particularly in a full classroom setting, where she struggled to keep up without more focused support.

Thanks to the thorough evaluation by the Occupational Therapist and access to the medical documentation, the school is now in a position to apply for placement at a special needs institution that can provide the individualised care and attention she truly deserves. In addition, welfare services have stepped in to support both the learner and her mother, working towards creating a more stable and nurturing home environment.

This learner now has access to proper support systems. She has qualified professionals who understand her needs. Most importantly, she has a community advocating for her success. These foundations will help her to develop skills at her own pace and build confidence in a supportive environment. For Khula Development Group, a Val de Vie Foundation beneficiary, this case demonstrates why collaborative care matters. When schools, therapists and welfare services work together, children receive the comprehensive support they deserve.
