Liam James, a 4-year-old boy from Wellington, has been a client of the Drakenstein Association for People with Disabilities (DAPD) since April 2024. Liam was diagnosed with Spastic Quadriplegic Cerebral Palsy at birth, a severe form of cerebral palsy that affects both arms and legs, often impacting the torso and face.

He has also faced challenges with his hearing and sight. Due to his condition, he regularly attends clinic and hospital appointments with a physiotherapist, speech therapist and occupational therapist to support his development and daily activities. Liam has also worked with a dietician, as his condition made eating and swallowing difficult, affecting his ability to gain weight.

At the Milani Daycare Centre, Liam has two dedicated carers who use interactive and sensory toys to encourage his engagement. They are deeply committed to his well-being, ensuring he receives the support he needs. Since joining the centre, Liam’s eating habits have improved significantly, allowing him to gain weight in a healthy manner. With his newfound strength, he can now roll over and sit independently when strapped into his buggy. His carers continue to guide him through physical exercises to strengthen his muscles, helping him grow in a nurturing and supportive environment.

With the unwavering encouragement of his family and caregivers, Liam continues to reach new milestones—each one a testament to his resilience.

As a beneficiary of the Val de Vie Foundation, DAPD is committed to more than just care—fostering dignity, empowerment and unlocking potential. At DAPD and the Milani Daycare Centre, dedicated carers create a nurturing space for children like Liam to thrive, meeting every step forward with encouragement and compassion, to ensure every child in their care has the chance to reach their full potential.
