As a beneficiary of the Val de Vie Foundation, we are proud of Thuma Mina Teaching’s expansion and their dedication to ensuring that scholars nationwide have access to impactful resources. For the past four years, Thuma Mina Teaching (TMT) has been committed to transforming the South African school curriculum into high-quality, concise video lessons that are freely accessible to learners across the country. While their primary focus has been on directly supporting students, they have recently announced an exciting new branch: teacher training.

Teachers who use TMT’s resources have provided positive feedback, highlighting three key benefits: improved curriculum mastery, upskilling in basic EdTech methods, and a practical approach to implementing the flipped classroom model. Recognising the potential to further empower educators, TMT decided to expand its efforts into this crucial area.

Based on their insights and engagement with the Western Cape Education Department, a programme was launched to train teachers in the Overberg district — a region where rural educators often miss out on professional development opportunities. We also acknowledge the generous support of other funders, such as Capitec, whose contributions have enabled TMT to train over 100 teachers for the remainder of this year. This is a true testament to the power of collective impact.

“We are also grateful that, while we focus on this initiative in the background, the engine can still run to produce more content through the generous support of the Val de Vie Foundation. Their backing ensures that our core mission of delivering quality educational resources continues uninterrupted. What excites us most is the immense potential of this initiative. If TMT can effectively contribute to teacher training, we believe it could significantly accelerate the transformation of South Africa’s education narrative. Empowering teachers, after all, offers a scalable path to achieving widespread impact, far beyond what we could accomplish by reaching learners directly,” Thuma Mina shared.

Together, we can make a bigger impact on education across South Africa. Let’s join forces to create a brighter future for young learners.
