“Creativity takes courage.” – Henri Matisse
Using art to create a safe and stimulating environment, the Paarl Youth Initiative (PYI), a beneficiary of the Val de Vie Foundation, shared the story of Shirlynn Cornelissen, who thrives in their art programme.
Every Wednesday afternoon, the Paarl Youth Initiative’s Good Company Programme comes alive with creativity, thanks to the talented Ms Jody Comninos from the Jack Meyer Art Centre. Under her guidance, interested learners explore their artistic passions and develop their skills.
Recently, these young artists’ hard work and dedication were rewarded at the Paarl Valley Eisteddfod. Shirlynn, a participant in the Good Company Programme, proudly received a Silver Plus for her outstanding artwork.
Shirlynn says, “Art is my happy place. It is where I can relax and make jokes. I can talk about anything here – what makes me happy, things that bother me, even when I’m sad. It feels like my second home. It feels like the only place I can really be myself.”
Creating a space where young people can express themselves in a safe environment is essential to their development. We are proud to support PYI, which continues to empower youth through diverse programmes that help develop their skills.
