Lawrence’s story is one of quiet determination and the power of consistent support. Raised in Groenheuwel, Paarl, he faced many of the challenges that often come with growing up in under-resourced communities. But through the Elevation Programme, Lawrence found the guidance and opportunities he needed to build a meaningful life.
He first discovered the Elevation Programme through social media, and after hearing about its success from friends who had participated, he decided to join. From then on, he became a regular attendee at their mentorship and tutoring sessions, gradually building confidence in his abilities. Through the Elevation Programme, Lawrence gained a deeper understanding of himself and developed a greater appreciation for self-contentment. The programme’s impact motivated him to pursue excellence and reach his full potential.
After finishing school, Lawrence joined Elevation’s Work Readiness Programme. “The work readiness programme effectively prepared me for the workplace by providing valuable insight into what to expect in a professional setting,” Lawrence shared and added that the programme’s focus on cultural diversity, behaviours and interpersonal skills was particularly beneficial, especially in terms of teamwork.

Lawrence completed a computer course, acquiring essential skills in Microsoft applications, and also took part in a training programme at Labit, which further improved his business skills and knowledge. This training at Labit has been crucial in empowering him as a young entrepreneur. Additionally, he was one of three recipients who received startup equipment, which will greatly support the growth and development of his business.
As we celebrated Youth Month in June, Lawrence’s journey reminds us of what can be achieved when young people are recognised, supported, and given the tools to thrive. He’s not merely creating a better future for himself—he’s actively shaping a brighter future for those who follow.
As a beneficiary of the Val de Vie Foundation, the Elevation Programme can continue to increase its positive influence and support more young people like Lawrence, helping them overcome their circumstances and become leaders in their communities.
