In many of the communities Mosaic serves, children face a range of challenges that make it difficult to thrive, both in school and in daily life. The Child Development programme was created to meet these challenges head-on by offering a structured, supportive environment where children from Grade R to Grade 12 can grow academically and emotionally.

During the school term, afternoons at Mosaic are a time of focus and encouragement. Children take part in the A–Z Reading programme, working through level-based exercises that strengthen fluency, comprehension, and vocabulary. For many, these sessions mark the first time they feel confident reading aloud. In NumberSense, they tackle maths in a way that builds understanding and reduces the fear often associated with numbers. Specialised tutoring gives students individual attention, helping them close learning gaps and prepare for tests and exams.

But it’s not only about academics.

Equally important is the sense of safety and routine the programme provides. Tutors get to know the children well, noticing when someone is struggling, offering encouragement, and helping to build resilience over time. It’s this consistent, caring environment that allows children to begin believing in their own potential.

After each school term, the programme shifts gears with a Holiday Programme that gives children a chance to explore beyond their day-to-day surroundings. These outings are often full of first-time experiences—from visiting animal parks to watching movies in a cinema, hiking in the Paarl Mountains, or swimming in a pool.

In the most recent holiday outing, children visited the Giraffe House. For many, it was their first time seeing giraffes, reptiles and other animals up close. The reptile show was a standout, filled with curiosity, wide eyes and a few nervous laughs. Experiences like these aren’t just memorable; they’re formative. They give children a chance to discover new interests, gain confidence and simply enjoy being kids in a space that feels safe and exciting.

At Mosaic, the Child Development programme isn’t just helping children keep up in school—it’s giving them the tools, experiences and support they need to grow into confident, capable young people.
