Two weeks ago, the Khula office doorbell rang. When the programme coordinator opened the door, she was greeted by a well-presented, smiling woman. “Do you remember me, juffrou?” she asked. Although initially unsure, the coordinator invited her in, unaware that she was about to hear a powerful testimony of change.
The woman went on to share her journey. Several years ago, her children had been part of the Khula programme. At the time, her substance use had started to impact her family, especially her children. It was through the consistent support and intervention of Khula’s social worker that she realised how deeply her struggles were affecting those around her.
Behind the scenes, the children’s father had told Khula that he was praying and trusting that one day she would find her way back to herself and to their family. In September 2023, with Khula’s help, she was admitted to a rehabilitation programme.
Since completing the programme, her life has taken a new turn. She is now fully rehabilitated and has recently married the father of her children. Together, they are rebuilding what was once broken, dedicating themselves to creating a loving and stable home for their children.
While Khula humbly claims no credit for this transformation, this story stands as a testament to the power of early intervention, belief in potential and the importance of community support. It serves as a reminder that no situation is ever too far gone and that seeds of hope, when planted with care, can indeed take root and flourish.
