“Opportunities are not mere coincidences: they are the deliberate creations of those who dare to envision and act.” – Chris Grosser

Beverly* from Wellington first became part of the Mosaic family in 2015 when her parents adopted her foster brother and sister. What began as a journey of family expansion soon unfolded into a deeply personal path of growth, healing, and transformation for Beverly herself.

Mosaic’s after-school programme became more than just a place to catch up on homework—it was a consistent source of support and encouragement through the defining moments of her youth. Among the most difficult was the loss of her mother, a life-altering experience that left her grappling with grief and uncertainty.

During this painful chapter, Mosaic walked closely with Beverly and her family, providing trauma support, counselling and safe spaces to help process their loss. Through time, care and reflection, Beverly slowly came to understand that while we cannot control life’s hardships, we can grow stronger through them.

Completing her Grade 12 was a deeply emotional milestone—one filled with pride but also a sense of longing. Her mother’s absence was felt profoundly, yet Beverly chose to honour her memory by continuing to pursue the dreams they once shared.

Fuelled by quiet determination, Beverly applied for work after matric, followed up persistently and eventually secured a job. The adjustment wasn’t easy, but she embraced the challenge with the same resilience that had carried her through so much. Today, she stands proud of her progress and excited about what lies ahead.

From daily support like internet access and warm meals to simply having someone listen on tough days, Mosaic’s consistent presence helped shape Beverly’s journey. Inspired by what she’s received, she now dreams of becoming a social worker—to walk alongside others, just as Mosaic did for her. Her story reminds us of the power of steady support and the remarkable potential that unfolds when young people are given space to heal, grow and thrive.

As a beneficiary of the Val de Vie Foundation, Mosaic continues to invest in young lives and strengthen families across our communities.
