Twice a year, Khula Development Group, a beneficiary of the Val de Vie Foundation, hosts Koek-en-Loer—an inviting morning where parents and caregivers share cake, spend time with their children, and engage in a special bonding activity. The event is always warm and filled with connection, but on one recent morning, a small, quiet moment revealed the true strength of our community.

A young boy waited patiently at the activity table, gazing at the door with hopeful eyes. As the minutes went by and it became obvious that his mother would not arrive, his disappointment grew, visible on his face. A silence settled over the room, and then the mothers around him simply stepped in.

Without fanfare, they helped him with the activity, offered hugs and included him in their conversations. Their attention was steady and kind, their voices gentle and encouraging. In an instant, he stopped being alone, and in that moment, he was held by an entire community.

Later, when Khula’s facilitator led him into the photo booth, something had changed. The devastation hadn’t gone, but a faint smile had returned. He stepped into the frame and, with the support he received that morning, he left with more than just a photograph. He departed with renewed trust, warmth, and the quiet knowing that he mattered.

Khula believes that “Through LOVE and EDUCATION we can make a difference.” That day, love guided the way, coming from the most unexpected and wonderful of places: a community of mother hearts choosing, together, to show up for a child who needed them most.
