James Frye

James Frye, a vegetable gardener at Orleansvale Primary School in Paarl East, is a testament to the power of determination. Despite losing his legs many years ago to peripheral arterial disease, he has not let his disability hinder his passion for gardening.

When COVID-19 began in 2020, the Ranyaka Community Transformation organisation helped establish the first vegetable garden at Orleansvale Primary School. Led by gardener Joey Erasmus, this initiative was designed as a self-sustaining community project.

With the help of his longtime friend James, the two of them created a thriving vegetable garden, providing vitally important healthy and nutritious food to school learners and the surrounding community. The project was so successful that James decided to start his own vegetable patch on the school grounds, where he works tirelessly every day.

On Wednesday 8 May, the Val de Vie Foundation donated a variety of new vegetable seedlings and much-needed compost to further James’s gardening success in aid of his ongoing project and his dedication and commitment.

James Frye truly is an inspiration, demonstrating that no challenge is too big to overcome if you want to make something happen.
