On a bitterly cold and rainy Saturday, September 16th in the Winelands, 16 Boland primary school rugby teams displayed unwavering determination at the Klapmuts 7s tournament.
Since its establishment in 2016, the Val de Vie Foundation has been a proud sponsor of this tournament, which today hosts 192 players, 32 coaches, 10 security personnel, 8 medics, 6 referees and 50 teachers.
This 8-year-old benchmark tournament has had its format replicated by the top non-fee-paying schools in the Boland, and this year earned the highest acclaim from Paarl Boys Primary, who joined for the first time.
Dreams did indeed come true this year, thanks to the Val de Vie Foundation’s donation of a new electronic scoreboard, which added a professional touch to the tournament.
“Our biggest dream was to rub shoulders with the best to become the best. We were so thrilled to have the famous rugby school, Paarl Boys Primary, “The Big Fish” join our tournament.” Remarked Andre du Toit, Klapmuts Primary Tournament organiser.
All the teams acquitted themselves admirably. The final saw a gripping contest between the host Klapmuts Primary and Paarl Boys Primary. Paarl Boys Primary won with a 17-7 scoreline, with Klapmuts Primary giving them tough competition.
Andre du Toit further said “This tournament is a testament to what can be achieved when we set aside our differences. Yes, we come from different backgrounds, we are not all the same, but with dedication, networking and commitment to make a difference, anything is possible.”
The Val de Vie Foundation donated 300 Spur burgers and energy drinks to the players, coaches and support staff. This first-ever taste of a Spur burger held immense significance for our players who had traveled from afar.
Klapmuts Primary emerged as the runner-up in the tournament and received their medals from Principal Viyounnefer von Willingh.
