Over R750 000 worth of shoes and backpacks are being donated to the 19 non-fee-paying primary schools in the Paarl vicinity during January and February 2019.   More than two hundred Grade 3’s from Mbekweni Primary were delighted to receive their reflective back packs and road safety training from Visibility is Life and the Val de Vie Foundation on Friday 18 January.

Overall, all Grade 3 learners from 19 schools in Drakenstein Valley will receive 2,200 reflective backpacks and sixteen schools will receive almost 2, 800 pairs of Buccaneer school shoes for their most needy learners.

These funds were made possible by the generous support of the participants in the 2018 Vodacom Shop Celebrity Golf Day, held at the Pearl Valley Jack Nicklaus Signature Golf Course on Val de Vie Estate on 18 October. Celebrities in the day included former Springbok captain Jean de Villiers, Bobby van Jaarsveld, Chester Williams, Allan Donald, AJ Venter, Schalk Britz and Rolene Strauss, to name a few.

Carla Portwig, Founder and CEO of Visibility is Life, addressed the Gr.3 learners of Mbekweni Primary and reminded them that the backpack they were receiving was a tool to make them more visible and safer on the road while walking to school and crossing roads, but that they needed to apply what they learnt from road safety training. “Educating young children and seeing their faces light up when they receive their reflective backpacks is a dream come true for me. In essence, what Visibility is Life does, is a matter of life and death. We teach children that they are valuable and worthy of owning something that potentially can save their life.”

The headmaster of Mbekweni Primary, Michael Njenxa, commented that: “We are truly grateful for the Val de Vie Foundation and Visibility is Life for making sure that our learners are safer. The parents in attendance today were in awe of the gesture for their children.”

The Val de Vie Foundation was founded in 2015 based on a strong focus of giving back to the larger community to help create a better life for all. The development company, Val de Vie Investments (Pty) Ltd, has committed 1% of all developer sales income to the Foundation. All of the new Home Owners’ Associations allocate 5% of levy income from new developments to the Foundation. In less than three years, more than R8 million has been allocated to the Val de Vie Foundation to support numerous viable community projects in the Paarl-Franschhoek Valley. Through its implementation partner Valcare – who is responsible for the intervention, project identification, monitoring and evaluation – the Val de Vie Foundation supports close to forty organisations in the Valley. www.valdeviefoundation.co.za

‘Visibility is Life’ started in May 2015 after Carl Portwig, Founder and CEO of Visibility is Life, was confronted with an accident where a farmworker was run over by a moving vehicle, at dusk. This incident left her with a changed perspective of how she can make a proactive difference in this social problem – the problem being non-visible pedestrians. That changed perspective became a vision, which she believes God planted in my heart. This changed perspective developed into a business that uses real stories, of real people, in real life situations, in such a way that the essence of this serious need is communicated that we face in our society. www.visibilityislife.co.za
